1.  Project Title:

Construction of hydroelectric power plants of the three stages on the river Shelek total capacity of 143.5 MW

2.  Brief Description of Project:

The main idea of this project - the construction of hydroelectric power plants of 3 stages with total capacity 143.5 MW on the river Shelek in Almaty region. Kazakhstan, due to the presence of mountainous terrain in the southern and eastern part of the country has a significant hydropower potential. Rivers of the region belong to the basin of the Irtysh River in the eastern and northern parts of the country, the Ural River in the western part of the country, and the Sir Darya river basin of Lake Balkhash in the southern part of the country. Hydropower potential is used by several large and medium hydropower plants - Bukhtarma HPP, Ust-Kamenogorsk HPP and HPP on the Irtysh Shulbinskaya, Kapchagai HPP on the Ili River, Chardara HPP on the Sir Darya, and Moynak HPP on the Charyn River. Renewable energy sources (RES), which are including and hydroelectric power stations, in recent years positioned Kazakhstan as one of the vectors of development of energy sector.

The country has adopted and actively implemented the Action Plan for the development of alternative and renewable energy in Kazakhstan for 2013 2020 (approved by Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated January 25, 2013 № 43).

A placement project will Almaty region - one of the most promising regions of the country, where the focus scientific, natural, industrial and agricultural resources, and accumulated a wealth of practical experience, constantly suffers from a lack of electricity due to the high concentration of industry and population in the region. Almaty, being the largest city in the country with a population of over 1.5 million people, is one of the largest consumers of electricity in the region.

Electricity consumption in Almaty and Almaty region in 2012 amounted to 7,498 MW / h, and produced in the region was 6,166 MW / h. Thus, the shortage of electric power of 1332 mW/hr. The region has only one large hydroelectric power plant, located in Kapchagai, with capacity of 200 MW/h. As a result, the region has to import electricity from Central Asia and Northern part of the country, which is considered to be full of energy.
